Say goodbye to slim pencil dresses and body-skimming skirts–the dominant silhouette on the Fall 2008 runways was high volume.
The 1940s-inspired bell--and more exaggerated egg--shape turned up on skirts and dresses, on runway after runway.
Balenciaga featured shifts with exaggerated flounces at the hip, while a knee-length, flowing skirt reminiscent of an upside-down tulip appeared at the Louis Vuitton show. Valentino offered up the most literal interpretation of the trend, creating a cartoonish, egg-shaped version for its haute couture show.
Stylist Erin Stafford, who has dressed stars from Jessica Simpson to Diane Lane, says the more high-fashion examples of the look can be difficult to pull off. "Bell skirts can be tricky for anyone except the ultra thin and those that are very fashion forward," she says.
Still, she doesn't write them off completely. "The pronounced skirt adds fullness to the hips and thighs–which is great for balancing out a broad shoulder or camouflaging a slightly larger thigh." And not to worry–trying this trend on for size doesn't require a couture budget or too much daring. More reasonably-priced, subtle bell and even tulip-shaped skirts are a great way to experiment with the trend.
